Mariska Dietz: from the Dutch Royal Family to Villa Las Tortugas in Marbella

Pure Life recently conducted an in-depth interview with the renowned interior designer and owner of one of the most exclusive villas in the Pure Living Rentals portfolio.

Pure Life, the magazine published by Pure Living Properties, sat down with the esteemed interior designer Mariska Dietz. In this conversation, Mariska shares her passion for Marbella, her work as an interior designer, and particularly her creation of Villa Las Tortugas, an architectural gem in Los Monteros, which is available for exclusive rental through Pure Living Rentals.

Mariska Dietz, one of the most internationally recognised interior designers, first visited Marbella at the age of 18 to spend her holidays at a friend’s house in Los Monteros. She was utterly captivated by the natural beauty surrounding the city. “When I decided to fulfil my Mediterranean dream, I knew this was the perfect place for my home on the Costa del Sol,” Mariska remarks. Thus, Las Tortugas was born, an oasis of Andalusian essence with tropical airs and modern touches.

Inspiration and Renovation by Mariska Dietz 

Las Tortugas is one of the most unique villas in the Pure Living Properties catalogue. When asked what inspired her to design and decorate it, Mariska responds, “After having our family home for over 20 years, we needed to update the property. The spirit of the house is extremely welcoming, with a positive vibe, so we didn’t want to change that atmosphere. We wanted to maintain the Andalusian style, but in a lighter, more modern way.”

The renovation of the villa was carried out with a strong focus on sustainability. Solar panels were installed, and the interior walls were finished with clay, a material known for its health benefits, including boosting the immune system.

In Las Tortugas, Andalusian essence merges with tropical aromas, a true reflection of how Mariska sees and feels Marbella. “When decorating the house, I wanted to capture the feeling that Marbella has always given me: blue skies, surrounding nature, and palm trees as the city’s iconic symbol. The result is an interior with a modern tropical ambience,” she explains.

Mariska Dietz began her journey in the interior design sector 15 years ago when she founded Maris Haute Design, but her passion for this world was ignited when she was a child. “For as long as I can remember, I have loved interior design. Even when my parents bought a new house and I was just a teenager, I started getting involved in how it should be decorated,” she recalls. Her first public project was a golf course that she co-owns in Wassenaar, Netherlands.

The Magic of Marbella

What did Mariska find in Marbella that made her want to have her own home here? “The beautiful nature with vibrant colours and the welcoming people… No other holiday destination gives you that kind of homely feeling. Plus, there are so many things to explore nearby,” she says.

The first time Mariska visited Marbella was at the age of 18, staying at a friend’s house in Los Monteros. When she decided to buy a holiday home, this area was at the top of her list. “I love spending my time in Marbella, not just for the vintage seventies interiors that I adore, but also for the extravagant clothing and nightlife. Having a few drinks at the bar of the Marbella Club Hotel is my favourite way to start a special evening”.

Projects and Passion for Design

Although she has not yet undertaken other interior design projects in the area, Mariska has designed an atelier in her garden house to work in Marbella. “I would love to contribute to the decoration of holiday homes or new restaurants and hotels,” she notes.

Every room in Las Tortugas has its own personality. Mariska admits it’s hard to choose a favourite. “Since I take care of all the rooms with so much love and detail, I consider every space to be outstanding and unique. I particularly like the combination of good vintage pieces and a mix of different styles with a touch of humour.”

As for her favourite spot in the house, Mariska says, “In winter, I love lying on the EDRA designer sofa in the main living room with an interior design magazine or a good book by the fireplace. It’s the best way to relax. In summer, we wake up, put on our swimsuits, and walk to the beach to enjoy a refreshing morning dip. After returning, we start the day with a good workout in the gym and enjoy a massage while deciding what to do with the rest of the day.”

The Villa of Mariska Dietz That Captivated The Weekend

One of Mariska’s most significant projects has been the renovation and decoration of the Dutch Royal Palace near The Hague, home to the Royal Family. “Receiving their gratitude was a true dream come true,” she says. Another project she is proud of is a mansion in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, purchased by the famous singer The Weeknd. “When I saw his show on HBO, called *The Idol*, the interior was the same as when I finished it a couple of years ago, so it seems we share the same passion for interior design,” the designer comments.

Looking ahead, Mariska has many projects in mind. “I have a great love for recycling interior objects that will look cool and special in a newly designed way. I believe we should all have a certain responsibility towards the environment and be more creative with existing objects.”
